1St there was Burley to depart even although he had taken Hearts to the top of the league and was unbeaten in 10 matches...

but now. It's the Chairman and the Chief Exec. that have 'left' the Hearts.
What, may i ask, is going?

I said a week or so ago that I felt that this Romanov guy was upto something and I think that there can be no mistaking now, that he is. It's not just a something but a SOMETHING.
It seems like the Chiefd Exec. got sacked because he had not achieved enough since he started the job some 8 months ago...ehm...pap. Attendences are up, season ticket sales are up, the team were sitting at the top of the league and were undefeat, he a appointed a top class manager. Doesn't sound like he hadn't achieved 'much'. By anyones standards, in any walk of life, that is impress but given footballs depressed state at the moment, the 'results' are fantastic.

But, it's not enough for our Mr. Romanov who promptly accepted the resignation of the Chairman, who had tendered his resignation in protest. Romanov has now appointed his 29 year od son to the post of Chariman and Chief Exec.
This, coupled with there search for another manager...

A farce. Who would job a club in such turmoil? No-one. It's that simple.

Romanov has punted 2 managers - the 3rd, Levein left before he was pushed. He has punted 2 Directors and replaced them with half of his family. He has interfered in team selection. It's not looking good.

Hearts had a chance to do very well this season. A very good chance but the last 2 weeks have seen that chance evaporate. Not entirely, but almost. Instead they have a tyrannical Owner who is intend on acting like a complete dictator. What's next?
He wants to build a 60,000 seat stadium. Where exactly...looks like it won't be Gorgie. He wants to win the Champions League within 3 years. Hearts haven't even won the Scottish League since 1960 (or there abouts). A team composed of Lithunians. Probably.

There is having dreams but quite another when they are so fanciful.
Someone needs to have a word..

Dissonant

Word of the week: 'Cold'

Well, the Korean version anyway - after all I hear it aloud from my students who can't seem to correlate the relationship between wearing no clothes and being cold. It's not rocket science...

Phrase of the week: can't talk.

Sight of the week: 'Brown and red and yellow'

Tat's it then. The year is over. The leaves are falling and really, I can't wait for spring to come around again. I'm not an autumn kind of guy...in Scotland, you only have 4 months or so of crap weather to look forward to and I think that is where my dislike comes from.

Song of the week: 'You only live twice' by Nancy Sinatra

It's a close call between this and the Coldplay version...alas, the original wins because it is the original. And a mighty fine original song it is to. Do they really make Bond soundtracks like this anymore? I mean, 'Goldfinger' is great as is 'Diamonds are forever'. Even some of the more recent ones have been o.k. but not quite of the quality of Bassey or Sinatra. Didn't Tom Jones 'do' 'From Russia with Love?

The

It seems that you can't express an opinion these days without getting nailed for it being 'outrageous' or non-PC. Well bo________________ks to that. If you have an opinion, express it...why not?
What's the point of having a voice if you never use it. One day, you might find it's gone because you haven't said anything.

People are unlikely to agree completely with your point of view. That's normal. Wouldn't life be dull if we were all clones, thinking and feeling exactly the same thing. But, life isn't dull, it's great because we all are different to some greater or lesser degree. Who is to say that what I think about x/y/z/ is right or wrong? By the same token, who is to say that you are right or wrong about x/y/z.

Have opinion.expressit.

Brother

Whoa...been reading about all this Political 'stuff' coming out of Iran. It's meaty stuff and doesn't really leave any kind of 'grey' area.
1stly, they are going ahead with their nuclear programme. I always have problems with this. I'm not really in favour of nuclear energy because of the storage issues associated with the waste products...and the half life or the fact that the radiation could kill and then there is the bigger point that all these other countries are telling Iran /and others/ that they can't have a nuclear programme whilst actually having a nuclear programme themselves.
Perverse.

If the 'nuclear' powers want other nations to listen to them, then surely they must take the lead and say 'ok, we're not going to have a nuclear programme now'. It's like telling my students not to drink too much over the weekend when in actual fact, that is what I will probably be doing myself. /potentially - depends if anyone of breaking up with their g.friend this weekhahaha!/

Oh yeah and th best bit...the Iran main man has indicated that Israel should be 'wiped off the face of the Earth'. Do you want to think about that statement for awhile Mr. President-of-Iran. I'm not sure I really understand what it is you are saying...

Alot of people are not that happy with Israel. They really know how to piss people off. It's remarkable. They must be one of the most hated set of people ever, in the history of the world. Even more unpopular than us Scots. What can they do. Maybe a 'sorry' or something might suffice?!?
Even if they did apologise for whatever they have done, then i'm sure people still won't like them that much.

Anyway, Iran...hmm. Strange one. Perhaps they know that they are next on the Bush world tour of terror and are coming out fighting. Didn't the Americans help Iraq in the Iran/Iraq War? Perhaps not the most clever move...

Twisted

Seriously concerned for 1 of my students today...REALLY worried.

There she was sitting opposite about to start her speaking test when she starts talking in Korean which was fair enough given that she is Korean. But, then she starts to get all flustered. I simply thought that she was nervous or stressed about the impending test. So, she started her sentences and then abruptly stopped. She started getting even more flustered. I ask her if she is o.k. and she mumbles something under her breath. She then tries to continue where she left off but then kind of turns to the side. At this point i'm getting concerned but then her eyes start to involuntary open and close akin to some kind of fit or seizure - similiar to the 'hitchhiker' in 'There's something about Mary'
I'm well flustered myself at this stage...but literally 10 seconds later, everything is o.k. and she continues on with her test as if nothing had happened.

Thnakfully, she finishes pretty quickly and to my relief, she leaves in one piece having completed her test having scored an 'average' score.
Weird. Never happened to me before. I wonder if she has a history of this kind of thing. She should definitely come with a health warning.

Favour

A cold is coming...I can feel it simmering under the surface. It's kind of hard to avoid given that I see 400 or so students a week and it's seems to be a particularly Korean thing to spit and cough and sneeze on or near the person next to you. It's not a pleasant experience getting on a bus sometimes but in saying that, I would rather get a cold over and done with now than later when I really need to be fit and healthy. Otherwise, I will be in a bad mood and we don't want that...

Flute

Word of the week: 'Nervous'

Apparantly, I make my students nervous. I'm not sure way. Perhaps it is the purple hair, the chainring linking my ear and eyebrow or perhaps it's the fact that they have to take my speaking tests!

Phrase of the week: '...by Mutual Consent'

You tend to hear this more and more these days...but especially in footballing circles. What a load of pap it is though. Clearly, it's not. Someone starts the ball rolling and the other person either agrees or disagrees. You don't have 2 people simply coming to the same decision and the exact same time.

Sight of the week: 'Mistake'

At my Uni there are 2 professors. They are both American and both have longish blonde hair. However, 1 is male, the other female. 1 is tall and thing, the other is tallish and rounder yet students still confuse the 2. How is that possible? Perhaps there are some parasites in the kimchi that affects eyesight...

Song of the week: my ears don't work.

Bonus

Let managers, manage. Let owners, own. It's that simple.
Don't let the managers, own and certainly don't let owners, manage.

Case in point. Burley vs. Hearts' Owner.

Idiot Owner trying to tell the manager who to play. A nonsense. Burley has the team at the top of the league and unbeaten yet the Owner punts him because Burley wants control of his team.

I don't get it. What does this Owner want...he's upto to something. People don't invest large sums of money into Scottish football like he has just for the love of the game. And why punt a manager after 3 successful months - hours before a match?

Something is fishy. I'm on Burleys side here.

Imp

All this talk of bird flu...that's what you get for sticking chickens in the fridge. It's envitable really. If you stick some bloke in the fridge, he would get flu as well. I daresay if you stuck a dug in the fridge the same would happen.
Clearly, i'm not advocating doing such an act, i'm simply pointing out the 'if'...It seems like alot of people are sticking chickens in the fridge because chickens in Romania and Turkey and here in Asian, have the flu. Those chickens should fight back or at the very least visit a doctor to get a jab against it.

Beast

So, the Scottish Parliament won some architecture prize, beating some reather dashing looking building in other parts of Britain. I'm surprised but I'm surprised because people are still not happy about the building.

O.k. is was 3 years late in completion and it cost 10 times the original estimate but come on, it's the Scottish Parliament. We haven't had one for 300 years. You can't put a price on that. Plus, if it's still there in 500 years, then you have to say that it was money well spent...what if some governer or something had suggest that building some tower in Pisa was 'alittle pricey' or some bloke suggested that the plans for the Taj Mahal looked abit tacky...we wouldn't have had some of the best pieces of architecture on the planet.

Continue complaining but at the end of the day, it's been built and it's there. What do you want to do with it - knock it down?!?

Fly

Silly season cometh. Tests, tests and tests. 2 weeks of sitting listening to my delightful students. Sometimes a pleasure, sometimes a penance. Usually entertaining.
Invariably, one can tell how a test will go as soon as the student walks into the classroom. If they walk in looking like they have the weight of the world on them, you know it's going to be a long 5 minutes. On the other hand, students who come in smiling or are looking comfortable invariably do fine.

One student however didn't sit into any category. In she came. Sat down and looked like she had actually kakked herself or something. I asked her is she was ok - i got a kind of half smile, half horror look from her. I tried to start the test but no sound came out of her mouth. Her facial expression remained the same. I asked her if she was sick. Again, no sound and no change of facial expression. I asked her is she wanted to take the test. Again, nothing. What could I do? It's like she was a zombie or something. In the end I send her out and told her to come back next week...I mean, i know that tests can be stressful but come on, it's not life threatening and certainly my test isn't too difficult or even that important in the whole scheme of things.

Hmm.

Anyway, the 'highlight' of day 1...student comes in, says 'hi' and sits down. We start the test. I ask him for his pre-prepared 5 sentences. Nothing. 'No' he says. 'o.k.' I think and move on to the next part. He had to pick 5 cards and make questions based on the cards. Card 1...he says 'I don't know'. Card 2...he says 'I don't know'. Card 3...'I don't know'. Same for cards 4 and 5. Perplexed I continue with the test. In the end he scores 2 points out of a possible 20. I think he's failing my class. The strange thing is, he comes to my class every week and I told him exactly the what he had to study but still nothing. I don't think his score will be bettered!

Boa

Word of the week: 'Blogsblogsblogsblogs'

Selfindulgent dross? of course. OR not. It's not a conversation. It's a one way stream of consciousness. egotistical 'mememe' at it's best.

Phrase of the week: 'Too much stress-y'

Immortal words uttered by mere mortals. Actually, student's all around campus have been saying this in the run up to the Mid-Term Tests beginning next week. To be fair most of them haven't actually uttered that exact phrase but they have uttered the Korean version - and smoked a rather large amount a fags going by the amount of stub ends lying around.

Sight of the week: 'Toe-nails'

Not really into feet, especially dogs feet but I have noticed the fact that these little, stupid over grown rats that pass for dogs here seem to all have painted toe nails. Gone are the dyed ears, in with the toe-nails. It must be the new autumn fashion. Can dogs be metrosexual?

Song of the week: 'Daft punk is playing in my house' by LCD Soundsystem

Name dropping is songs is never really a good idea but we'll make an exception here. Hipster baiting at it's best. Plucking bass, timpany and electronic fuzz. Wish they were playing in my place.

Apparant

Cracking...a 3-0 win for Walter's boys. Rejoice while you can. Admittedly, it was only Slovenia away but when it comes to Scotland, a 3-0 is a mighty fine scoreline against any team. By all accounts, 3 very well execeuted goals with sublime build up play. Perhaps the future is not orange, perhaps it is blue after all. However, we're not going to the World Cup and we finished third in the group. That is the cold, bare stats.
This particular campaign has been on of complete frustration. The absolute shambles that was the Moldova game, the fighting performance against the Italians, the excellent away wins in Oslo and Solvenia sandwiching the dire Belraus game. In fact, we took points of every team in the group. No mean feat.

It seems that on out day we could be a very decent team, yet on the flip side, we can be pants and it's this schizoprenhic tendency that we must eliminate but whether or not we can is another matter. It pervades Scottish life and culture as a whole. Fantastic at Bannockburn and Stirling Bridge. Crap at Flodden and Culloden. Brillant in the run up to the '78 World Cup. Crap at the World Cup. Shocking in the last 6 Nations but excellent against the Barbarians. It is certainly a case of 'will the real Scotland please stand up?'

One day, we will get it right. And the next day and even the following day. Surely, we can't continue with memorable highlights followed by depressing anti-climatic lows.

___________anyway, it's great being Scottish.

Factor

U might of noticed that i'm quite into my football...as a result, I do read match reports and other football related articles. Mostly, such reports are of a high calibire, written by 'professionals' in that particular field for newspaper and other media outlets.

However, I have a problem with Korean reporting of the beautiful game. Some background:- Korea played Iran in a friendly. It was Dick Advocaat's 1st game in charge of the Korean National Team. Below is a newspaper report of the game...i've highlighted some totally crap parts of it to emphasis how crap the National Press is here and how unknowledgable the reporters are. Honestly, the writing is shocking. It makes the Sun look like a work of genius.

.
"The South Korean football team made a pleasant start (**/pleasant?!?/**) under the new leadership of Dick Advocaat, brining the Dutchman a 2-0 debuting victory against Iran in Wednesday’s friendly at Seoul’s Sangam World Cup Stadium.

As if sweeping away all the hustle and bustle that has been whirled in since the 2002 World Cup, the squad gave a remarkable performance to put the sellout crowd (**/it wasn't - perhaps 3/4 full/**) into frenzy and herald a new start into the 2006 World Cup.

South Korea got ahead of their Middle Eastern archrivals in their encounters with eight wins, seven losses and three draws. They also avenged their latest defeat to the Iranians in the quarterfinal match of last year’s Asian Cup. This year, South Korea records 6-5-5.
Midfielder Cho Won-hee made it an unforgettable day in his career by scoring the winner (**/how can the 1st goal in a 2-0 win be classed as the 'winner'. The winner is the odd goal in a mtach, usually scored in the dying minutes of a match/**) in his first cap as a national team member and also setting a record for the fastest goal ever made by the national team.

The 22-year-old Suwon BlueWings player made it a double pleasure by being selected MVP (**/is that the match of the man?/**) in the game.

To most fans’ surprise, Advocaat employed two national team newbie (**/eh?/**) Is that someone making his debut?/** midfielders, Cho and Lee Ho, as starters. The adventurous attempt worked well as the two debutants were stellar on the pitch, running the squad smoothly, but most of all, answered in the most amazing way available. (**/what is that all about. Utter nonsense - it's not even real English/**)

Kim Dong-jin sent a cross from left. Mohammad Nosrati cleared it with a header but Cho got the ball and fired a right-footer (**/right foot shot, no?/**) right out from box, which deflected hitting Nosrati, then Rahman Rezaei, to find a hole to the net. It was just 59 seconds into the first half.

South Korea was dominant throughout the first half thanks to the young, stable and aggressive midfielders’ line. With tight press upon their opponents (**/is the reporter ironing or something?/**) working well, South Korea didn’t allow a dangerous moment.

In the 15th minute, Lee Dong-gook fired a volley off a Kim Do-heon cross but ended up hitting a defender right in front of Iranian goalkeeper Ebrahim Mirzapour. Three minutes later, a powerful Kim Jin-kyu free kick went wide left of the post.

A handful of scoring chances by Iran came off feet of key player Ali Karimi. In the 21st minute, the midfielder beat two Korean defenders into the box and shot a right-footer right in the box but it met with the side of the net.

With the beginning of the second half, South Korea made another challenging change in the squad. Midfielder Baek Ji-hoon replaced veteran defender Choi Jin-cheul, who led successfully the 3-back line in his comeback match, to make it a rarely used 4-back system. (**/never heard Hansen mention this/**)

That was when the Iranians started to come on tough(**/like a bully or something/**), capitalizing on the less solid Korean defense. They seemed to have an advantage in the midfield but it didn’t lead to an equalizer. Karimi’s left-footer in the 53rd failed to score and a free kick by Fereydoon Zandi threatened the Korean side 10 minutes later. Substitute Arash Borhani headed off a corner in the mouth of the goal in the 77th but it went up the woodwork. However, the hosts again scored the second goal for a fine finish.

Right at the end of the second half, Ahn Jung-hwan, who replaced Lee Dong-gook, intercepted the ball around the circle and went for a counter with a thundering rush to the box. France’s FC Mets (**/is that F.C. Metz - get ur facts right/**) striker slotted it to the inrushing defender Kim Jin-kyu, who fired a left-footer. It hit the leg of Rezaei, lobed over the goalie Mirzapour and went into the goal, for his third goal in international matches, to seal South Korea’s victory. "

.
Utter pap___________'journalism' at it's absolute worst.

E-mail the reporter on: hckim@koreatimes.co.kr and tell him/her that they are mince and should be sacked.

Back to the grind after the week 'off'. Just getting out of bed wasn't that easy particularly now that the mornings are getting alittle chilly. 'Chilly' in a relative sense given that the weather we are experiencing now is akin to a decent day in Scotland...but, i like!
But, some things never change.

Student's not handing in assignments even although they were given 4 weeks in which to complete it. tHAT, i can't be doing with. They have known but still they don't quite get it. I was thinking, 'which part of Monday 10th October don't you get?' It was even written in Korean for their viewing pleasure. hmm.

Set

Word of the week: 'God'

Alot of discussion about this recently. All I can say is that 'he' hasn't spoken to me or revealed 'himself' to me. In fact, i'm not sure 'he' has spoken or revealed 'himself' to anyone in quite a while. I wonder if 'he's' on holiday or something.

Phrase of the week: 'These Nativers'

Actually, uttered by a friend of mine. Clearly, needs to check the dictionary. I didn't have the heart to say 'look, there is no such word'.

Sight of the week: 'Crash'

The sight /an sound/of Scotland's hopes of claiming a play off spot which could have gotten them to the World Cup. Over and out. Not surprising but alittle hard to take. No major championships since '98. Depressing.

Song of the week: 'Some Groove Armada thingy'

It's on a mix compliation and I have no idea who it is or the name of it but it's damn fine. Bit vague really.

Flap

Got this bloke at my gym who must be some kind of assasin. There can be no doubt about it. It's his dress sense that gives him away. I wonder of anyone else has noticed...
Usually, people who go to the gym wear shorts and t-shirts or some kind of tracksuit thing. This guy doesn't.

He's all in black. Black trousers. Not tracksuit trousers but just black trousers. He invariably wears black trainers. Granted, that is standard gym attire...but a black military style vest isn't. And there is the tan line on both his arms. It's october. You don't get tan lines in october. The clincher for me though, that really blows his cover is the fact that he wears a black cap. Not a baseball style one but a Veitnam-era one with no visable signs of motif. This is all topped off by his black, circular 'sunglasses'. When he arrives at the gym, he's not wearing them but actually changes into them to workout. He also seems militaristic in the way he conducts himself. Very upright when walking.

Perhaps the reason that i'm concerned by this bloke is that he always talks to me and seems disportionatially happy to see me.

Of course, he could just be some bloke who is friendly and likes dressing in black who works out around the samed time as me.
I'll keep taps on him, just in case.

/new/

Apologies...too much religious stuff lately. It's funny how things come in 3's. But, I just can't help it. I think it's because it's depressing. The 'Church' this, the 'Bible' this and people live their lives by it. Perhaps I should. Perhaps I am wrong and that i'm truly going to hell. I need hard fact and evidence. Religion doesn't particuarly offer that and that is why I have problems with it. Some of it is all 2000 year old gossip, some if it is not true and some of it should be taken literally.
__But, milions and millions don't agree with me. It seems like the most 'powerful' man in the world doesn't and that's upto him and the 'others'.

I just can't get my head round what is happening these days. 'God' told me to do this or that. If I killed someone or went upto someone and whacked them and told everyone that 'God' told me to, I would be taken to a Mental Hospital and classes as 'ill', yet Bushy boy says that 'God' told him to kill x/y/z in the Middle East and nothing. Nothing happens.

I despair. I really want to say a whole lot of things but what is the point. I am just some random in a random place randomly doing random things. I can't change anything. I don't particulrly have a voice. I can't make that one decsion that would change 'things'. Am powerless to stop or alter anything even if it's wrong.
revolution time.

George Bush has claimed he was on a mission from God when he launched the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, according to a senior Palestinian politician in an interview to be broadcast by the BBC later this month.

Mr Bush revealed the extent of his religious fervour when he met a Palestinian delegation during the Israeli-Palestinian summit at the Egpytian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, four months after the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

One of the delegates, Nabil Shaath, who was Palestinian foreign minister at the time, said: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I am driven with a mission from God'. God would tell me, 'George go and fight these terrorists in Afghanistan'. And I did. And then God would tell me 'George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq'. And I did."

Mr Bush went on: "And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, 'Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East'. And, by God, I'm gonna do it."

And, by God are we doomed?

Another day...another day without class. University Festival this week which sees classes cancelled for the duration. I think that means that I have 9 days 'off' in total. Certainly not complaining, though it does mean that there are no further day's off until the end of semester in December. It does sometimes feel like I don't have a full time job, although i guess you could argue that once ateacher always a teacher whether that is inside the class or outside of it.

Chemistry

...Apparantly, the Bible might not actually be true. The Scottish Catholic Church has admitted that much. Nice of them to say so. What of all those generations of people who followed and believed word for word. They must be fairly annoyed. I have just cut and pasted what they said. I have not altered it in any way...strange how the 'untrue' bits are longer than the 'true' bits.

Truth and fiction in the good book
UNTRUE: Genesis 2:21-22 "So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept he took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh; and the rib which the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man."
Genesis 3:16 "God said to the woman: 'I will greatly multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring forth children, yet your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall rule over you.'"
Matthew 27:25 The words of the crowd: "His blood be on us and on our children."
Revelation 19:20 "And the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who in its presence had worked the signs by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshipped its image. These two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with brimstone."
TRUE: Exodus 3:14 "God reveals himself to Moses as: 'I am who I am'."
Leviticus 26:12 "I will be your God, and you shall be my people."
Luke 1 The Virgin Birth.
John 20:28 Proof of bodily resurrection.

Sunbeam

Word of the week: 'Korean'

Mine. It's crap. Can't even hold a basic conversation yet. It's depressing.

Phrase of the week: 'It shouldn't have happened'

Uttered by our 'Dear' leader, Tony. Alas, he was not referring to a certain 'war' but talking about the old bloke who was chucked out of the Labour Party Conference for shouting 'Nonsense'. Well Tony, i'll go 1 step further...he shouldn't have been detained under the Terrorism Act. 1984here we come.

Sight of the week: 'Tripping'

Not that one...but the actual act of tripping up over something. If ever I see someone trip over on the street or anywhere actually, I just find it soo funny. I try really hard to look concerned and if I know the person, ask if they are o.k. but in actual fact i'm doing my best to stop laughing. It's a terrible habit and one which should have stopped when I was 8 years old but there you go. The reason I mention is it I saw this big butch bloke walking towards me...clearly trying to act all masculine but then suddenly and inexplicably he tripped - actually, it more of a stumble - and in doing so lost all his masculine aura. I pretended to look the other way, as if I wanted to cross the street but if I looked at him, I knew what would happen. Thankfully, I got passed him before this huge grin appeared on my face. Childish? Yes.

Song of the week: 'Westilife'

An interesting choice this week. Not because I like it or even tolerate it but because most of my students seem to be singing the damn thing. What's going on...did it appear on some tv ad or something. It's doing me nut.

Dipper

If you got 100 or even a 1000 gorillas and 'taught' them all sign language and 'taught' them how to use and make simple tools then let them back into the wild...would they use their new found knowledge with their 'families'.

You could leave them to get on with it and then in 5 years return. What would happen?

Would they have used their new found knowledge or would they just revert back to their normal way of life?

And if they do did ...would we have altered the evolutionary course of these gorillas.
Hmm. /clearly, i'm bored/
